The School Library Review also notes that 'Dialogue balloons, fact boxes, and paragraphs of text share space with several illustrations per page, offering information in bites rather than straight narration.' This was another point that almost scared me off. It kept my three year old's interest nearly all the way through and my five year old loved it. This book has an age range of 3rd to 6th grade, but I read it to my five and three year old girls for bedtime this evening.

It's the youngsters who so often get shirked when it comes to the topic of the history of the universe. And once she's ready for the in-depth information, she will have reached a niche much more willing to provide it. Later, when my daughter is ready, she can explore the intricacies in depth as her mind formulates the kinds of questions that a simple book, as this, cannot answer. And that's important to me, because what I want is to simply introduce these concepts. It also has the virtue of compressing vast amounts of information into the kind of bite-sized chunks that won't send a five year old running for cover. This book does make use of cute cartoony graphics, as stated, but it doesn't go so far overboard as to be nauseating.

The answer, even from someone with a very finicky sense of humor as myself is no. I was a little skeptical about this book after reading the School Library Review that states, 'With slang expressions and onomatopoeia such as 'yep,' 'phew,' 'splat,' 'whoosh,' 'woweee,' and 'yoo-hoo' throughout, these humorous presentations will lose readers who hate personifications and comic-book art, but will engage those who find science too dry and perfunctory.'ĭid that mean that this book would be trite and annoying? Would it be too goofy-cute to bear using it as a tool to teach a young child some introductory concepts regarding the birth of our universe, solar system, and Earth?
