They also likely needed more time to absorb the 5E rules, as some of the mechanics just don't feel right, plus a few spells might even be game-breakers.īasically, this book is good, but it could have been better. There is beautiful puppetry designed by Amber Donovan Kahn and lovely visual abstractions in Hannah Sibai’s set including artfully fluttering ocean waves and a giant luminous globe which looks like. There are also some spells similar to other spells in the book perhaps they should have spent some time trimming. Many spells are clearly based on official 5E spells, with additional features or different damage or the like. I had a blast reading through this book, and many of the more interesting spells immediately suggested adventure hooks. The sheer quantity alone is amazing, and there are lots and lots of cool ideas. There are 708 additional spells for 5E in here, most if not all of which appear to be conversions of material from the 3.5 and Pathfinder eras, including updates to some lost Advanced D&D 1st Edition material. Ultimately, this is merely cosmetic, but it bears mentioning. The formatting generally follows that of 3.5 and Pathfinder, as well. This was released under the Open Game License for D&D 3.5, rather than the not-yet-released 5E OGL, and they had to use workarounds to make it legitimate, such as using the term 'tactical advantage' instead of advantage.
